Endangered Status
The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, a subspecies of the Cutthroat Trout, is on the U.S. Endangered Species List. It is classified as threatened in California, Nevada, Oregon, and Utah. The decline of this subspecies can be attributed to overfishing; changes in habitat caused by water-management practices and by the mining and timber industries; and the introduction of non-native fishes which prey upon and compete with the natives for resources.
