Trouts and Salmons
Endangered Status
The Greenback Cutthroat Trout, a subspecies of the Cutthroat Trout, is on the U.S. Endangered Species List. It is classified as threatened in Colorado. The decline of this subspecies can be attributed to toxic runoff from mines, irrigation practices, development, and other modifications of the environment, which essentially robbed it of its habitat; as well as overfishing and the introduction of non-native fishes that prey upon, compete with, and hybridize with the natives.
