The J-B brand written on the top of the page was Thomas Jefferson's brand. Someone was trying to copy the brand image, probably much later after the document was originated. Brackets indicate that I made a guess as to the characters in the brackets.

Note: The piny woods land reference would be on Bayou Cocodrie. "Cocodrie" is a derivitive of the Spanish word "Cocodrilo" for "crocodile or alligator" defined in Spanish as "Reptil acuático grande [large aquatic reptile]".
