First of all, I found a marriage in Caroline county, VA for a Mary E. Marshall and John G. Oliver on 3 Jan. 1825. I have a copy of it in my possession. Then another one of our cousins who is descended from John G.'s second marriage told me that she had found a Mary E. Marshall at the LDS library. I checked on that and wrote a letter to the submitter but he never answered my letter. But he had William C. Marshall listed as the father but there was no listing for a mother - only that of a second wife. Rosalie Meullion. The children he had listed are as follows:
l. Roger Banks Marshall b. ca 1795 Caroline County VA
2. John H. Marshall b. ca 1797 Caroline County VA
3. William C. Marshall b. ca 1799 Caroline County VA
4. Robert Hardin Marshall b. ca 180l Caroline County VA
5. Lucy C. Marshall b. ca 1803 Caroline County VA
6. Mary E. Polly Marshall b. ca 1805 Caroline County VA
I started checking on William C. Marshall and found that he had married Rosalie Meullion Wells (widow Wells) in Avoyelles Parish, LA. I have a book "Three Pioneer Families of Rapides Parish" which has a little info on William C. and Rosalie. The only thing I disagree with in the book are the date which he and Roger Banks arrived in Rapides Parish and the age of Roger Banks. According to the census records, Roger Banks Marshall could not have been that age - much younger. I , also, think they arrived in LA later than the books says.
Getting back to the marriage certificate - it does not have the signature of a parent only that of a Samuel Winston. I thought that strange at the time.
In the 1840 census of Avoyelles Parish it lists John G. Oliver with a wife and three sons (Dewayne says that they had four sons) and an older couple which quite possibly could be John G.'s parents. They are listed as living next door to a William C. Marshall (this is probably a brother as the elder William C. died prior to 1840) and the Widow Marshall a couple of doors down and still a few doors down is Roger Banks Marshall.
It seems that when the elder William C. Marshall first came to LA he brought with him only Roger Banks Marshall - most of his other children joined the Marshall clan later. Have been in touch with a lady that is descended from this family and she says "according to old family history" (which has not been verified) that William C.'s first wife was Mary Quarles who died in child birth. Apparently, he had left the rest of his children with relatives when he and Roger Banks made their trip to LA. The lady I have in touch with says that she is, also descended from Samuel Winston. The Winstons are supposed to be related to the Quarles, but at this point I do not know how.
Rosalie Meullion Wells is a story unto herself. Everything I have seen written about her talks about her "being of high birth" and "the closest thing to royalty" to ever grace that part of LA. It seems that her father was a doctor from France and he was a Commandant of the Rapides Post prior to the 1800's. There is a plantation around Cheneyville or Lecompte (I forget the name right now) that a Wells is supposed to have built in about 1810. This Wells brother was supposed to have been disinherited from his family's fortunes. I suspect that Rosalie married into this family of Wells - her first husband was supposed to have been Welling Wells.
I went down to Marksville last week and had only a couple of hours to research - was looking for a will, probate or succession records for William C. Marshall and John G. Oliver and possibly something on an older Oliver after 1840 but found nothing. Only found slave sales and land sales for William C. Marshall starting in 1808.
Now getting back to John G.'s first wife - we know that she was living in LA in 1840 but had died before 1845 as John G. had married Eliza McDaniel in 1845 in Avoyelles Parish.
To date, have found nothing on John G.'s parents. Although there was a Thomas Oliver who was a judge in Avoyelles Parish in the early 1800's (don't know how he fits in) and a Francis Oliver who was there about the same time.
I really need someone to help me verify that Mary E. Marshall and John G. Oliver are ours in Caroline County VA. If we could only find a will of the elder William C. Marshall or some other piece of legal documentation that proves this. Right now, it is all circumstantial but everything fits together. My gr-grandmother (daughter of Cornelius and Martha Ann) was named Mary E. Oliver and she had a sister named Lucy who died at an early age.
=============================
There is proof in John G. Oliver's succession that Cornelius Calvin and William H. Oliver were his sons.
